Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. What is Sheffield IVC?
An active social club for singles and couples who want to go places, meet people, try new activities and enjoy company. It is one club within a national association and covers a wide geographical area around Sheffield. Members can also attend events at other IVCs around Britain. (http://www.ivc.org.uk)

Q. How long has it been going?
Sheffield IVC was set up in the mid 1960's. This means we have a track record - not here today and then disappeared.

Q. Who joins?
Our members are from a wide range of careers and occupations. The most important things are a willingness to get involved and the ability to mix with others. Membership is open to both singles and couples All lively and sociable people are eligible to join. We have no barriers on the basis of sex, marital status, qualifications, sexuality, disability, race or religion.

Q. What area do you cover?
Most members are from Sheffield although we also have members in Barnsley, Rotherham, Chesterfield, and Doncaster. Members can also join events at 45 other IVCs across Britain.

Q. How much does it cost?
Current membership rates are £10.00 , it's a bargain.

Q. What do I get for my money?
A monthly programme of activities organised by members. Just contact the organiser and join in. Sheffield IVC is not a business, run for profit. The annual subscription pays for printing the monthly programme, advertising, insurance and general administration. We rely on our membership to organise our programme of events. These are all free, except where the organiser incurs a cost, such as for tickets, accommodation or for providing food.

Q. What do I have to do as a member?
The main thing is to enjoy yourself! Attend as many events as you wish - there is no minimum and no maximum. To ensure a full and varied programme of events we would like you to help organise a couple each year. Organising events is an excellent way to get to know other members. Just pick something you would like to do and add it to the monthly programme to invite other members to join in.

Q. Can I try before I buy? (link from trial membership)
You certainly can! - and unlike some other clubs we don't limit you to just one preview event. Join us for three months for only £5.00 and get to know us before you commit yourself. You can come along to any event - contact the Membership Secretary for details.

Q. Can you give me some idea of what the club does?
Events are as varied as members wish. In the past, they have included walks, cycle rides, parties, barbecues, meals out, camping trips, visits to local attractions, cinema and theatre trips, quiz nights, weekends away, holidays abroad, music and dance events including salsa and ceroc. If you want to do something, you don't need to get permission - just put it in the programme.

Q. How do I book onto an event?
You will receive a programme each month either by email or post. The programme will tell you precisely what to do - normally just a matter of telephoning the organiser and asking if there is still space. Let them know if you are a new member and we will make sure you are looked after.

Q. Can I bring my child to events?
Sometimes. It depends on the event. Remember that this is a club for adults. Some events do not lend themselves to children attending whereas others (like walks, picnics or trips to the cinema) may well do. A number of members have children, so it's not out of the question. Check with the organiser before you book.

Q. Can I bring a friend?
Yes. We'd like to meet new people, so bring them along. However, if they come along regularly, please ask them to join - it's fair that they do so.

Q. Is there any way of finding out what's on at short notice?
Yes. Members do organise things at the last minute and we have an email message service that you can use to send messages about events to other members and to receive messages as well.

Q. What sort of facilities are there for finding my ideal partner?
IVC is NOT a dating agency or singles club! We don't do dating events! It is a club for meeting people who enjoy company when engaging in activities they enjoy. Of course, people do meet up and pair off but there is no pressure and we try to ensure everyone feels comfortable at events.

Q. I'd still like to talk to someone before I come along. Can I do this?
You probably have all sorts of questions to ask. Call one of our Committee Members. As the committee members are not paid or full time, you may need to leave a message and we'll call you back.

Please email us if you have additional questions and we will be happy to answer them.
